Advocacy
The ADVOCACY COMMITTEE is a forum of the PTA at Steele Elementary School where parents, teachers, administrators and others can discuss concerns; gather information; and advocate for the children in our community. We are a diverse group of people, and promote a diverse range of issues; but are united in our commitment to successfully advocate on our children’s behalf.
Duties:
· To support and speak on behalf of our children at school, in the community and before governmental bodies and other organizations that make decisions affecting children.
· To assist parents in developing the skills they need to raise and protect their children.
· To encourage parent- and public involvement in DPS (Denver Public Schools).

Cultural Enrichment & Assemblies (Co-Chairpersons)
This committee schedules from 5 presentations per school year. Past events include: a Native American speaker, Irish step dancers, a marimba musical band, science demonstrations, and Earth Day educational activities. The events are usually split into two assemblies held in the school auditorium: one for the primary grades K-2 and one for the secondary grades 3-5
Duties:
· Collaborate with the principal, teachers, and parents of the school to determine enrichment topics.
· Locate and schedule speakers and performers.
· Arrange payment.
· Coordinate parent volunteers, if necessary.
· Publicize the events, if necessary.
· Coordinate the annual family educational program called Stories under the Stars, which consists of planetarium shows, story-telling and other activities.
· Provide an update during PTA meetings.

Enrichment - After School Programs
Coordinate the before and after school activities such as dance, art, drama, music, language, chess, and sport camp.
Duties:
· Research program providers.
· Work with the principal to schedule times and locations.
· Organize flyers to promote the activities.
· Keep detailed records of contacts, contracts, bills, receipts, and student participation.
· Provide an update during PTA meetings.
· Hire an after school supervisor and act as liaison between the supervisor and the PTA.

Greening of Steele/ Earth Day
Twice a year, the Greening of Steele chairperson organizes a cleanup of school grounds by students. The chairperson encourages ongoing environmental awareness among students and their families.
Duties:
· Work with the principal to identify two days per year when each classroom will go outside and clean a certain area of the school.
· Divide the school grounds into 12-14 areas and assign each classroom a time and location to clean.
· Contact families and organize tools for cleaning: trash cans, rakes, shovels, brooms, wheel barrows for people to use.
· Organize parents to help supervise the children during the cleaning.
· Organize refreshments: water, treats, and popsicles for the students.
· Provide an update during PTA meetings.
· Work with the Enrichment Committee to find speakers or plan events that promote good environmental citizenship.
· Provide information for students to take home or for placement on the Steele website.

RIF - Reading is Fundamental
RIF is a national program that encourages children to read. The PTA purchases hundreds of books and every child is allowed to choose one book to take home and keep.
Duties:
· Work with the principal and RIF to schedule a day, time and location for the event.
· Select and order books through RIF.
· Display the books and maintain records of book selections.
· Work with the teachers to organize a time when each class, one class at a time, where each student can choose a book.

Reflections Art Program
Reflections is a National PTA-sponsored art recognition program for schoolchildren.
Duties:
· Gather material from PTA brochures and distribute flyers, newsletter articles, Thursday Folder information, and posters.
· Work with Steele teachers to promote student involvement.
· Collect entries and submit them to the PTA regional office in Lakewood.
· Display entries throughout the school.
· Publicize the names of Steele award winners.
