Pledge Drive Chairperson
Steele Elementary needs a coordinator for the Pledge Drive, the annual direct donation campaign that raises money to help fund a para-professional or intern in each classroom. Pledge Drive planning begins in January, with the campaign starting in early spring. You won't be starting from scratch--there's plenty of background material and documents from previous campaigns. Contact Lori Eronimous (eronimous@aol.com) or Pam Silverberg (reed@ecentral.com) for more information or to volunteer.

Out Of The Box
Do you have a few hours to give?  Can you commit to one Friday? Or Six... The Out of the Box program needs your help!  This awesome program is 100% parent run which means we need PARENT volunteers.  If you can help out by getting the kids from class to class, assist in a class, or be a hall monitor to keep our kids safe please let us know.  We need help from 1:45 - 3:00 pm every Friday thru November 21st, 2008.  This is a great way to experience this excellent program first hand.  Please e-mail Laurel Harris harrislaurel@yahoo.com, Whitney Ellis waellis@comcast.net, or Linda Austin linaustin@comcast.net to let us know if you can help out for a few hours. Thanks in advance for your support of this cool program!

PTA Volunteer Coordinator

Do you just LOVE working with people?  Are you warm and friendly, but very detail-oriented?  Our school needs you!  We are looking for a Volunteer Coordinator that will motivate, recruit, maintain and support an army of volunteers that will turn some great, but abstract, ideas into marvelous reality.  This is a brand new position at our school, so you get to chart the waters for yourself.  This position is NOT about finding parents to volunteer in our classrooms, each room has its own parent coordinator that answer to the teacher. If you are interested, but not sure what it entails, then please contact Pam Silverberg at reed@ecentral.com There is a parent that would be willing to mentor you in the position.

Extreme makeover… Decoration of Steele

This is your chance - speak up now!  The Principal and the PTA are collaborating to update the décor inside the school building.  You might have noticed that some posters have come down and new art is going up.  The objective is to update the “look” by using wallspace to showcase the artwork of Steele Students.  This presents an opportunity to brighten the halls of learning and display the work of our budding artists, making the space we pass by every day a point of pride for students, staff and parents. Will you please join Jane Cole (parent) and Miriam Ungar (Art teacher) as they develop a comprehensive plan that complements the lighting and other upgrades planned by the Principal.  No question too dumb, no suggestion too outlandish!  Make a difference by contacting Miriam_Ungar@dpsk12.orgjane@colecats.com or Pam Silverberg (reed@ecentral.com)

Request for expression of interest – Audit Committee

The PTA handles a considerable amount of money during the year, and is required by the bylaws to audit its books.  The PTA Treasurer is seeking interested individuals to participate on the audit committee.  The work will entail providing guidance to the treasurer, periodic review of the books, review of the accounts for the major fundraising initiatives and assistance with tax filings.  If this sort of thing is a piece of cake for you, or you want to learn about how a 501 (c) non-profit works, join us in managing the PTA funds responsibly.  We are compiling tax returns for the past fiscal year now, so don’t delay.  Contact the Treasurer, Andrew Watson, at A_Watson@earthlink.net today.  All free advice accepted!

Request for expression of interest - Road Safety Initiative

A number of parents have expressed concern about safety as kids walk and bike to school.  Following the walk to school day last week and the associated safety awareness program, we’d like to take up some of the issues with the authorities.  The Principal has held talks with Denver about traffic controls, and we’d appreciate your input so we can improve pedestrian and biker safety at major crossings of Alameda, Downing, Dakota and Virginia, as well as around the school in general.  If you’re willing to lead this initiative, or just have some ideas and want to advocate for student safety, please contact Marie Meyer at SteeleAdvocacyCommittee@yahoo.com or 303-518-9968.

House Tour Positions Needed
PUBLIC RELATIONS MANAGER: Using a very solid media list that we already have established, you make sure the Tour gets all the
coverage needed.
AD SALES: A team of 3 will secure ad space with new and repeat advertisers. (We have 2 people, need 1 more!). This is an
integral part of the fundraising for the Tour and we expect to generate proceeds through this channel!
COORDINATOR: You make sure you have enough volunteers at the right spot and time at the day of the tour.
TREASURER: Helps to coordinate receipt of ad revenues as well as tracking ticket sales and end of event expenses.
At this time, we are in the process of selecting homes for the Tour as well as securing our key sponsors. At the moment we meet every month as a team and do some preparations on the way . In January we will have an official kick-off meeting for all Committee Members and will meet more frequently. We hope to have you as part of the 2008-2009 Wash Park Home Tour Committee! It is an event to be proud off and a joyful way to meet other parents. Please email (sabine@berg5.com) or call me directly at 720.479.8437 if you have any questions or can confirm your participation in the Tour. You also can drop in on our next meeting Friday Oct 24, 8.30 am at 1251 S. Williams St.

Reading Is Fundamental, Inc. (RIF)
RIF is the nation's oldest and largest non-profit children's literacy organization. Its purpose is to help young people discover the joy of  reading. RIF, together with the Steele PTA, supports literacy development by providing free books for children to choose and keep.  During the months of November, January and March, each Steele student will be receiving a free book through the RIF program. Our first distribution, "Vote for Books," is scheduled for November 21st during the school day. We need a few parent volunteers to help with set up, distribution and clean up.  If you would like to help, please contact Elisa Erickson at 303.715.9168 or elisa98999@hotmail.com
